MESSAGE TO MY SON
A MESSAGE TO MY SON
My precious little boy, one day you will be a man. It doesn’t happen in one day; it is a journey. I wish I could tell you or teach you all things you would need to know, to be a peace-filled man, but I am still learning myself how to adult. There are a few things I do know, some of which I will share with you. It is important to know that if a man cannot follow, he will never be able to lead. Commitment, determination, endurance, patience and faith are more powerful than speed, force and physical strength.
People may not remember everything you do, however, they will remember how you do it. I want you to always strive to make people feel worthy and important for whatever they can contribute. One important truth I want you to keep dear to you is that the omission of information is the same as a lie. When you try to meet life on your own terms, you may be forced to renegotiate those terms. Each day is a blessing my baby boy, and what you do with your blessings determines a lot.
Be willing rather than willful; listen rather than being the first to speak; be open to correction rather than unwilling to hear another’s point of view. The accumulation of material possessions is not the measure of success. My darling, a man who cannot laugh at himself is a danger to himself and others. A man who does not trust himself is a man who cannot be trusted, and a man who cannot be trusted is a man who cannot love.
A man is what he thinks, and what he thinks is a reflection of what he holds in his heart. Most importantly, I want you to know that it is okay to be vulnerable, because when you are vulnerable, your heart stays innocent. Innocence is our gift from God. All men start as little boys who need information, who need to be taught that learning and unlearning is a never-ending journey to greatness.
I love you more than all the grain of sand in the world, far more than all the drops of water on earth.
